TOEFL, Test of English As A Foreign Language, adalah tes kemahiran berbahasa Inggris yang dibagi menjadi 3 jenis, paper-based TOEFL (PBT), computer-based TOEFL (CBT), dan internet-based TOEFL (iBT). Khusus untuk Indonesia, yang paling populer adalah PBT dan iBT. Perbedaan diantara keduanya terletak tidak hanya pada jenis media yang digunakan, dimana yang satu menggunakan pensil dan kertas, sedangkan yang lainnya menggunakan internet, tapi juga pada jenis soal yang diteskan. Untuk PBT, tesnya terdiri dari 4 bagian: Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, Reading Comprehension, dan Writing Test (ada juga ITP TOEFL jenisnya sama paper-based, tapi tanpa writing test). Sedangkan untuk iBT, hampir sama kecuali tidak ada bagian Structure and Written Expression, yang ada yaitu Speaking (hal ini karena media internet memungkinkan perekaman dan penilaian speaking oleh tester native speaker lebih nyaman dan akurat).
